What is Right Brain Therapy?
It’s amazing how much has advanced in the mental health field in the last 20 years. Advancements in research, diagnosis, drugs, and treatment techniques, and attitudes towards seeking treatment. Healthcare professionals are revolutionizing the path to mental and emotional health. Patients who, in the past, would have been resigned to a life in and out of treatment facilities are now living healthy productive lives.
Studies have clearly shown that brain function is altered by the effects of emotional wounds. Dr. Mungadze has devised a new way to see, hear, understand, and resolve these alterations and effects through a unique therapeutic process called Right Brain Therapy. Right Brain Therapy uses therapeutic approaches that bypass the left brain and open the door to the real person inside – the person most freely expressed by the right brain.
Through his research over the last 20 plus years, Dr. Mungadze has made some remarkable discoveries concerning the response of the brain and psychological trauma.
If you have struggled through years of psychotherapy with little results, or if you are completely new to therapy and looking to find the most effective path to your mental and emotional healing, you’ve come to the right place.
Psychological, emotional and physical issues are best expressed by the right brain so any therapies that utilize the right brain will be more effective. Words either in spoken form or written form are not the only way to communicate a person’s thoughts or feelings. So, the use of non-verbal and symbolic forms of communication is an important pathway to understanding and growth. When dealing with emotional or psychological distress, psychological trauma, physical trauma, or PTSD is best communicated through the use of collaging, writing, drawing, and/or music. RBT is such an innovative solution to help promote self esteem, and healthy development. The aim of the Right Brain Therapy solution is to create a wealth of positive attitudes and overall mental health for our clients.
To help you understand why we focus on the right brain, here are a few facts:
THE RIGHT BRAIN DEVELOPS EARLY IN LIFE WHILE WE ARE STILL IN THE WOMB
The prenatal brain develops at an amazing speed. Imagine that one day you decide to count nonstop until you get to one billion. Let’s assume that you could count one number every second on average, so it would take you a billion seconds. After doing the math, this means that it would take approximately 32 years to count to one billion.
Now, let’s consider the fact that one tiny cell in an embryo grows into a fully-developed brain with 100 billion cells by the time a baby is born. To put this into perspective, remember that it would take you roughly 32 years to count to one billion (averaging one number per second). This means it would take you about 3,200 years to count to 100 billion! Yet, in only nine months, a human brain – with 100 billion cells – is formed. This means that at least 250,000 brain cells are created every minute on average!
THE RIGHT BRAIN IS USED IN NON-VERBAL AND EMOTIONAL COMMUNICATION
Have you ever listened to a song that “speaks” to you? Maybe there was a photograph or a painted picture that you “knew” exactly what the artists wanted to convey. Artists for the most part are very insightful and have God given talent. But, they have also experienced hurts, pain, and have soul wounds that give them insight into the human experience. They are taking an emotion, feeling, experience, spiritual conviction, or biblical truth and turning that into a visual so that others can “see” or experience for themselves. This is why RBT uses the right brain through collaging, writing and sometimes music to allow the brain to express certain thoughts, feelings, and behaviors using symbols, color, and placement of words and certain symbols.
MORE EMOTIONAL THAN ANALYTICAL
On the average women tend to be more “right brained” or emotional than most men. Their communication skills are more sharpened than men. A woman can sit down and tell a man “how she is feeling” while most men struggle to have a conversation. Yet, if you have noticed men can sit and talk for hours about sports. This is because the conversation is mainly based on; statistics, plays, positions, salaries, and the history of the team players. This is a “left brain” action. Most men are left brain creatures. The difference is that men “live” or operate with a very analytical mind; numbers, facts, black and white. There are women who live and operate with their left brain, and men who live and operate with their right brain. It isn’t wrong or right only statistically speaking on the average. This is why women do not sit and talk for hours about the exact route that they took to get from point A to point B. They may talk about a recipe because to most ladies food represents something more than nourishment. It represents family, love, good conversation or a holiday. The Right Brain is where communication resides. In the female fetus the right brain develops much earlier than in the male fetus. This means that the female is able to communicate at a much earlier age than males. Most female toddlers begin speaking earlier than male toddlers. This explains the female’s ability to “talk” more eloquently, and for some more frequent.
EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT TO INCOMING INFORMATION
This simply stated means putting an emotional twist on a situation, a response, or a person, place or thing.
Below are two examples of all four points listed above on the right brain, how it works in a typical situation and how it works when life wounds are involved.
Here is a typical normal situation on how information is processed in both sides of the brain:
An employee worked on a report for four days and turned it in at the set deadline. The employee’s boss looked over the report and wants to make some changes and point out errors. The employer goes to the employee and goes over the needed corrections, and changes that the employer wants the employee to make. The employee “feels” disappointment after working so hard on the report (the right brain at work) and starts developing ways to integrate those changes into the report (again the right brain at work). However, knowing that this is the employers business and new growth depends on the report being perfect, the employee makes those changes knowing that in the long run they will benefit personally from those changes (the left brain processing what just happened, and able to analyze why those changes needed to be made).
Here is the same situation on how information is processed in both sides of the brain when that person is dealing with emotional wounds from past traumatic experiences:
An employee worked on a report for four days and turned it in at the set deadline. The employee’s boss looked over the report and wants to make some changes and point out errors. The employer goes to the employee and goes over the needed corrections, and changes that the employer wants the employee to make. The employee “feels” disappointment after working so hard on the report (the right brain at work) and starts imagining that the boss “doesn’t like them personally” and isn’t happy with their work (again the right brain at work). However, the employee is not able to see that this is the employers business and new growth depends on the report being perfect. The employee makes those changes fearful, and tearful the whole time taking the whole thing personally (the left brain is not able to process what just happened, and not able to analyze why those changes needed to be made).
